Administering meds

Hi all

I need to be quick, so sorry to just jump in and post, but does anyone have any tips for syringing meds into a dog who is off food and aggressive?

It's Zantac, for suspected Acute Pancreatitus.

If it's essential you get it down him, I would use a muzzle and syringe it into the side of his mouth through that.

Um... I would try getting it in really tasty smelly food. I use stinky cheese, give them a piece with no medicine in, then have the pill bit ready and give it to them and straight away given them a non pill bit. Hopefully if you have a greedy dog they will be so busy quickly swallowing one bit to take the next bit that they ignore the pill. Good luck!

Hi Catrin, OP says one of the probs is that the dog is OFF their food (and aggressive). Otherwise I too would have suggested mixing it with treat food.

And if they have to syringe it in I assumed it was not pills or powder but a liquid - not so easy to mix that with cheese etc.

Oh no, is Woody ok? I echo the muzzle and syringe in the side of the mouth.

Do what I did with Dolly when I couldn't get her medication down her because she wouldn't eat and she isn't aggressive, I went back to the vets and told them the problem, they soon sorted it by giving her an injection. The injection was dearer than the liquid, 4 times dearer, but worth being worry free.

Not cheese it's way too fatty if the dog has pancreatitis !

Muzzle and syringe is the answer as has been suggested.

Thanks everyone.

The vet just called to see how he is (we're home caring for him) and she said not to bother with at all actually as it'l just make him more stressed and he doesn't seem to be in huge pain anymore.

FC he's on the mend!
