They are learning "bite inhibition". I have always tried to copy this behaviour so that my dogs are always aware that their teeth can hurt. If the bite is too hard then I yelp and the game stops for a while.
My dog is four years old and I still play fight with him. I make a point of putting my hand in his mouth and maintaining his sense of bite inhibition.
He is raw fed and can chomp through a bone with no problem but he is very gentle with his bite when we play.
My older dog has great bite inhibition but doesn't like to play with him, he puts up with a couple of nibbles before baring his teeth which i know is good for pup to learn. This week a few times he has had my hand in his mouth and gently sort of bitten but last night i really struggled to get him off!

My pup is fed all her meals out of my hand, out of a food dispensing toy (she has 3 different types) or out of a puppy Kong. She is partly raw fed too so a chicken portion takes quite a long time for her to eat too. The benefit of this is that it exercises her brain and fills her time up so she is busy eating for a total of 1-2 hours per day rather than a total of 10 minutes.

The crate is Betsy safe place and not a punishment. Toys and crews are still in there and I sat next to it. Every time she fell asleep- the vet and behaviourist told me it was the equivalent of a toddler getting overturned and losing the plot a bit. This was sorted in under a week...along with impulse control games. She hasent nipped since.

Also cheese and dairy made Betsy hyper. Crying like a puppy or moving utility the room and ignoring her didn't work either...made her more determined!

Tia is now 15 weeks and I will be using these toys for a long time yet as she's a very bright pup who could be a nightmare if understimulated. Today I bought 2 more which are more complicated, a bit like moving from GCSE to A Level.

Thanks! What sort of things do you stuff kongs with? I am going to make his crate a nicer place for him. Weve had a good morning at puppy class and the trainer said to do the same! What do you stuff kongs with for puppies?

Minced rabbit, beef or her favourite stinky green tripe. You can poke bits of kibble in with it too.

These are my dog's food dispensing toys. They really are worth every penny if you are having problems with a pup. You will notice a bowl at the back which never gets used.
