Nope, not scared of them at all - in fact I really like them.

As for your hubby's concerns, the best way to overcome other peoples fears or preconceptions of a breed are to show them how well trained and well behaved they can be A well trained dog changes more peoples minds about a breed than any wagging tail!!!

If you got one I would socialize it to death with kids, adults, dogs, cats etc and get it used to meeting and greeting others in a controlled way. This way you will have a nice, well-rounded dog that can be controlled around other people and dogs.

As long as your dog is well behaved and under control when off lead, like all breeds of dog should be, I see no reason why a Ridgeback should worry other walkers.

Where I live there are quite a few ridgebacks and every one of them are lovely placid dogs whose owners never seem to have any problems with them . On the walks I go they are always off lead and never cause any problems

I think they are a lovely breed, if the two I knew, are anything to go by. Very gentle and very well-behaved. The woman who had the two of them was totally in control.

Totally agree with this- Sydney is always very wary of doglets that can pass under her tummy.

Would agree with all that is on here, as long as the dog is well socialised and trained, as with any other breed, I can see no problem.
Our RR is the most placid and loving dog you could ever find. Other walkers are pleased to see her and are always keen to talk, have never had any problems with anyone being worried about her.
If you are prepared to put some time into training one of these intelligent and strong willed dogs you will get a beauty.
I was just chatting to a couple of neighbours this evening- they commented on what a mild mannered girl she was and how they did not even know when she was home as she is so quiet.
I know she can look imposing looking out of the window when people come to the door - but security - I am not sure she is a real baby

Many thanks to everyone who replied. My husband has finaly agreed, I also got him to talk to a couple of dog trainers, who basicaly confirmed what has been said already. I've got couple of breeders in mind, so hopefully by September we'll have a new baby girl.

Lovely news. All the ridgebacks I've met so far have been most upset that Cosmo won't play with them...he is obsessed with his ball! Bless them I always have to apologise to the owners!
