Dog afraid of the car /panting and shivering

Can anyone tell me the best way to get Bob used to going in the car. He will jump in the back(my car is a hatchback) but as soon as we start moving he starts to pant and shiver he also jumps over the back seat so one of us has to sit in the back with him. I hope someone can help as it's nice to go to diffrant places with him

Maybe just patience and plenty of praise so he associates the car with rewards? We have a doggy car harness for Danny - keeps him from jumping around in the back and also keeps him secure

Oh we had a rescue dog like that Rob. She jumped in the car willingly when we brought her away from the rescue - although as soon as we got in the house she had diarrhoea all over the carpet. She absolutely hated the car and she would pant and saliva all over the windows. We tried everything but in the end just gave up. You only had to get the car keys out and she would run and hide Perhaps some short journeys with a nice walk at the end of them might make him a bit better and look forward to his trip more, or give him some rescue remedy to calm him a bit before he gets in the car

Does he have a crate he could go in? Some dogs don't like seeing the world whizzing past them.
Good luck

Very short journeys full of rewards: ie. if there is a park close to you take him there, so that he associates the car with going to nice places.

Give him his favourite toy while he's in the car. Praise him when he's calm but don't reassure him when he acts scared. get him a seatbelt so he can't jump around. Maybe put a blanket on the seat that he already likes lying on and smells familiar?

You can try some DAP spray in the car to calm him down, or a couple of drops of Lavender oil on a bandana around his neck can also be calming.

I think there are a couple of people on DW that have had this problem (Steve?) so they should be able to help

Good luck

Oh yeah the crate idea is good - try putting a blanket over it so he can't see.
