Thirty-six [36] horses have been killed at Aintree over the last twelve [12] years, including twenty-three [23] on the Grand National course.

Does anyone think that those deaths are acceptable?

No IMO one death is one to many.
I havn't read all the posts but I did notice somewhere someone saying about more horses die in their fields. This has nothing to do with horses being knowingly sent to a race where it is known there is a good chance they won't be leaving it alive.
I could never put a horse or any animal I cared about into that situation.
You get freak accidents in fields, but the race is not a freak accident is is planned and when horses die there year after year then this is just not acceptable.

That is a straight question---you won't get an answer from people who do think it is acceptable----you will get ifs and buts and comparisons to other situations.

For me is is not acceptable.

This is an interesting quote

<<The Grand National might be a spectacle that captivates the British public, but for me it simply serves as a reminder of the absolute disregard for animals and their welfare which some humans seem to have.

For too long, the cruelty of the race has been blithely ignored by the horse-racing authorities and the race-going public.

It shouldn’t be like this. Sport, after all, is meant to be an uplifting activity, reflecting the quest >>.

I got those figures from an article in The Sun

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...se-deaths.html

written by Steven Howard who is their chief Sports Writer.

The picture at the top of the article showing Jockey Paddy Brennan comforting Synchronised, who said afterwards “I was just making sure he was OK. I put my arms around his neck to soothe him, telling him he was OK. It was very sad.” and who stayed with him as vets administered a lethal injection, shows humanity. As does Paddy's actions and words.

Not much humanity shown by those who glorify The "Grand" National IMO.

No death is "acceptable" to me.

Whehter horses die i the field, during eventing, racing, dressage etc (ad horses have died participating in ALL the above activities and more)

The stats concentrate on the GN but horses die in other races, at other courses on the flat and over the sticks.

Would it be ok for those odds of death for dogs in flyball, agility or showing?
