Any knitters out there?

Hello,

Could anyone help me please, I can knit but I am still a beginner, I know all the stitches and how to increase decrease. I have got some aran wool 10 * 100g. Would it be possible to use a pattern that is designed for use with DK or not. What it the problem is that most aran patterns are cabled and I don't think I could cope with this yet. The pattern is for a man's jumper, with a polo neck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ian - going loopy!

You can Aran doesnt have to be cabled but a DK pattern is designed for DK wool and so the tensioning and number of stitches needed to knit the same thing is different.

You can pick up aran patterns which dont involve cable patterns. Although I think they are few and far between.

Cable knitting isnt as hard as it sounds. It basically involves knitting and pearling just the same only at certain times as stated in a cable pattern you have to remove so many stitches to another needle and ignore them while you knit the next few stiches and then you bring them back the stiches on the other needle to stitch. It sounds complicated but once youve done it a few times its easy. what cabling basically does is cross for example 3 stitches over 3 stitches, a bit like plaiting but with only 2 strands. It sounds complicated but it isnt.

very ambitious Ian I can knit a dishcloth with lots of holes in it and I somehow always seem to end up with far fewer stiches than I started with I don't know where they go

Ji Roxy,

I have some oddments of wool, I think I will try a bit of cabling to see how I do, I may try it out on a sweater, if not I will just follow the basics of the aren pattern I have and leave out the cable.

Thanks yery much.

Hi Minihaha,

I used to be a bit like that but practice makes perfect as they say - I am not perfect.

If you knit a square in aran and compare it to a DK square you should be able to work out the correct number of stitches needed for any pattern.
