FAO CHLOE

Hello

I was just wondering what you would consider to be a good breed of horse, for a starter horse??

When we move we want to get 2 horses but dont know if any are particully easy/hard to own lol

Morning

Its very much dependent on what you want to do:

1. Do you want to hack, jump, endurance etc?
2. What height would you want?
3. How heavy are the riders?
4. Where will you keep them? Livery yard/out 24x7
5. How much can you afford
6. How much experience to do you have riding?

For a good, well mannered neddie that will look after you and be viceless you are looking at 3K plus... not to mention they are in short supply and very popular...! Let me know the above

1) hack
2) umm well im 5ft 7 so probs 6ft 3 ish (horse) sorry dont know what that is in hands!
3) the riders will be between 10-13 stone
4) stables, and then a field with shelter
5) money isnt really an issue !
6) i used to have riding lessons but school commitment meant i had to quit, my mum is horse mad, she loves them, shes had horses before.

i love the fawn horses with the blonde hair!

Its a colour I think!

Well, I would say to go for something based on an Irish Draught. They are very quiet and laid back, but if you want a bit more fizz then get one thats got some TB in. Best height being about 16hh. They are also usually good jumpers but they are not spooky or silly at all

If you want something sparky then you could look at a palamino welshie - but they can have a stubborn streak and can be a bit naughty.....!

I like gypsy cobs too.

hehe i dont know anything about breeds of horse. But my parents had a very lovely horse called Sam. they decided to go travelling for a year, so they gave him away to a blind chap who needed a horse so he could do a sponser thing. Anyway, Sam looks after him very well and always knows how to take him home.

i think horses have an instinct about whos riding them dont they? Like if ur a beginner, then can sense it and they look after you?

My parents friend owns a very mean horse though and has put her in hospital several times, inc a neighbour who he broke his ribs the day b4 xmas day. She wont have him put down as she loves him too much, and no behaviourist or vet will come out and see him!!!

Yep - they're a good few grand Gems!

I agree Jenny - some horses will respect their riders and some will even look after them - others, usually from some past remembered pain, will do anything to avoid being ridden - its a learned behaviour unfortunately.

Talking of good horses though, my farrier came today to replace a shoe on Josh and stood looking at me as if I had totally lost the plot as I rubbed his gums (Josh, not the farrier!) and cleaned his teeth LOL
