The council is elected, and if enough people make enough fuss about this appalling situation, they would have to back down. Politicians being politicians, they are more interested in keeping their sinecures than in any political principal. Responsible dog owners in Ireland need to fight this or it will be the thin end of a very large anti-dog wedge.
Those irresponsible idiots who own "macho" breeds to compensate for their shortcomings elsewhere, plus the drug dealers who use dogs as a weapon, should be targetted by the Guardai. The old Anti-DDA slogan comes to mind - "Punish the Deed, Not the Breed!"

why don't the dubliners appeal to the european courts ?, it's an infringement on their civil rights.
I've found the last thing politicians and local authoriteis want is bad publicity. give em a scare.

Incidentally, the "Japanese Akita" no longer exists as such under the Irish KC/FCI so they haven't even got that right.
This country is getting worse by the minute
Which Country do you mean? Dublin, being in the Irish Republic, is not in the UK and falls under different laws. Not to say that this is right, but if something happens in another country/state it does not mean that others will follow such as Britain/UK.
Be assured that the Irish KC is fully aware of this situation and as I write, the TV is giving this a lot of coverage. There is a big problem in Dublin City with druggies on certain estates who do use certain breeds to deliberately intimidate their neighbours, but as one guest pointed out on TV, any dog can be forced to behave in this way not just particular breeds.
I think this one will be high profile for a long time.

Idiots is all I can say and I agree I hope the people will fight them, how do they expect people to give up their dogs just because of what breed they are regardless of behaviour - they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

And not allowing all others to walk dogs in a park just because their breed - again regardless of actual behaviour?

The councils need to focus on the real problem areas and stop wasting their time and everyones money on this sort of thing - things that they clearly have no idea about needless to say.

Sorry I've not read the whole thread but thought I'd add that I saw this recently and discussed it with someone who's aunt lives in a council estate in Dublin.
The estate was described as far worse than we have here, with many of the elderly not leaving their house for fear of being attacked. Dogs are fought regularly (apparently) and they let their dogs out hoping they will return in the evening.

From this point of view, whilst I think it completely stinks for responsible owners I can see where they're coming from - these are the breeds targetted by the residents and not socialised or trained and encouraged to fight.

However, I do think there should be other ways of going about it - what happens when they've had their GSD destroyed and move onto a dog that's not banned, teaching it to be just as aggressive?

As Nicci says it only affects those with council houses, BUT this also covers all council land parks and the such oh and public footpaths!!! so you can keep a dog but you can't look after it? so this does affect everybody and not just council tennents! and it will not take long for other councils to follow in line! I said this a while ago in a thread about merseyside! "NO BREED IS SAFE ANYMORE! LIFT YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND! ALL DOG OWNERS NEED TO PULL TOGETHER AND STAND UP TO THIS!" lol rant over thanks for putting up with me
