A lip curl to be proud of.

That title seems like a contradiction, doesn't it?

When we first got Missy, she did bite, lightning fast and no warning. I found that out the day someone threw their rubbish over the pavement and she nabbed a lamb chop which I had to get back from her.

Today, I was seeing someone out of my house when the next door neighbours opened their door. They are not used to dogs but have made friends with Missy. The mum came over and cried out "hey Missy" loudly and went to pat her on the head ( very heavy handed)

My girl curled her lip and took two steps back.

I explained to mum why she shouldn't approach with a swift pat on the head, so instead she held her hand out for Missy to sniff. Missy sniffed and licked her too.

I wonder if you can understand my pride - she curled her lip and retreated. I am so proud of that. Normal dog language and not a straight launch into a bite.
Normal. My little darling is getting to be a normal dog. I'm so proud of her.

Yes, I can totally understand your pride

Well done Missy, that is a huge step forward (even though she moved backwards if you see what I mean)

Well done Missy, it's lovely when they start to learn the polite way of letting you know isn't it?

well done Missy - and it's great to see someone who is pleased that their dog has lip curled and given some warning. So often people think their dog is possessed by the devil because they have lip curled or murmered a growl - when, like you say, really it is their only way of asking people to back off!
