Cassy our new rescue Newfie

Greetings all Dogsey members, apologies about delay, I found some batteries and managed a few piccies of Cassy our new rescue Newfie. The Newfoundland welfare people are not saying much, he's terribly thin and you can feel his ribs and backbone and there is nothing but skin and bone, so far he has gulped his meals down as if his life depended on eating it quickly, he also has a heart condition, and he is so desperate for human company and assurance that we both feel he has had a hard time.

But he is a lovely dog, Rianna likes him, there has been absolutely no animosity between them, this morning I watched as he just stepped over her to go outside He's quite a bit bigger than Rianna and tonight he was trying to get the chicken I was preparing, and his head is almost level with the worktop

OK here's a few piccies:-

You can't see it in the photo but where my wifes hand is resting you can feel his back bone and the shape of each individual bone

and of course one of Rianna 'cos she must not be forgotten with the new boy on the scene

He is a lovely boy, poor lad has been through a terrible time, hope he now gets the life he really deserves after so many years of neglect, so glad Rianna likes him, because after all that is the major and most important part of it. Cannot believe he's only 40kg, my girls weigh in more than that, how heartbreaking he's gulping his food down like this, thought if he has been in rescue they would have got the weight back on him by now to be honest, it defies belief to think he could have been in a worst condition than this when he was taken in by them

Hi June, they were trying but the problem is that they have to use a commercial kennels, they visit the rescue dogs as often as possible, usually (but not always) every day, so the rescue dogs don't get much extra in the food portions, plus he hasn't had a chance to settle and has been without human company every night, the welfare people have done the best they can but not being in a members home has not helped.

Plus it might be he has worms, we will obviously get that checked as soon as possible, but mainly they think that he needs to settle with us and calm down and not have to worry where his next meal is comming from.

yeah once he's been wormed and on several small meals a day he'll come round, its amazing what a bit of TLC, decent food and peace of mind will do.

Good luck with him Harvey - he's a beautiful chap, has an absolutely lovely head on him. At least he's landed on his paws now, hope everything is plain sailing and that you have him as your companion for many a year to come.

Thank you Gordon, the welfare people said they thought he was about 8 years old but we think he is probably younger.

He does look younger than that. Cassie is a lovely looking dog, and I'm sure that he'll look really great when you get some weight back on him. There has been a 2 yr. old rescue Landseer in boarding kennels in the Midlands recently. They had posted that he was becoming stressed by kennel life, so perhaps your boy has also lost weight due to kennel stress.

Thanks, posting pictures is always a bit of a struggle for me finding batteries, getting in the right place to get a half decent shot, downloading, and worst of all finding them once they are in the PC but got there in the end
