Because that's what they have been bred for for many years through selective breeding of the more friendly dogs.

Many of them, like my ex GSD much prefer human company to the company of other dogs

I think maybe it is because we have made them dependent on us. Perhaps I'm cynical!!

The question could also be asked "why do people love dogs so much" - some of us anyway.

Edited to say
Seriously though, i think there is often a mutual attraction thing going on between man and dog and, of course both dog and man use each other to fulfil their own needs.

humph.......I sometimes wonder if it is just cupboard love with our latest rescue boy !

He is all over me with huge loving eyes and endless cuddles when time for dinner/walkies etc. looms - then when that particular highlight of the day is over he jiggers off to find a place by the radiator or on a bed to be alone

Evolution

It's been in their interest to work alongside (i.e. be nice to!) humans, and has helped the species survive and prosper - much more than other wild animals who have never had the chance.

It's also one of the reasons they are so attuned to us.

Plus they are just lovely creatures with a lotta love to give

Because we have bred them to need us - without grooming my yorkie wouldn't last long in the wild and my lovely soppy Mollie couldn't fend for herself for a minute.

I'm not sure that Lola does love me. I'm just her way of getting the things she wants:
  • food
  • treats
  • walks
  • access to other dogs
  • new places
  • someone to kick a ball
  • a leash to hang off so she doesn't bump into things when sniffing
  • body heat if she's cold
  • scratching the base of her tail

Turns out that owning Lola is not much different from owning a cat!
