weighing & measuring

The KC have announced that they are to stop compulsory weighing and measuring in the showring, next year. They have made it clear that this is for health and welfare reasons... at least that which pertains to the mini Dachshund.

Yes it's a tad annoying I'm going to invest in my own measure so I can accurately record the heights of my own stock.
I can see over size toy and mini poodles now

I have to say I think that for Min Dachies it is a good move. Some of them looked positively anorexic just to be kept to the weight. Its one of the rreasons I stopped showing my dachies, You went to a show and people were frightened to give their dog a drink incase it would bounce the scales. Also a lot of the scales were not accurate anyhow. I just would not refuse to give my dog a drink just to keep it from bouncing the scales.

Having said that I hope it doesn't go the the other extreme and they let them get too heavy , buf if exhibitors are sensible about it this should not happen. They also did not differenciate between adog and a bitch and a dog is heavi er boned and I think it may have been a better idea to keepweighing but raise the weight limit slighly and also make it a little heavier for a dog than for a bitch.

Have to confess I'm delighted for a very selfish reason,As show secretary, if we have a dachshund enter our limited show I have to have a scales available which usually means me phoning the owner of the entered dog & asking if they have a scales & can they bring it. Either that or I pay to borrow one from a local open show & then have the problem of collecting & returning them. Height measures are not a problem as the poodle & spitz measures we own between us cover all the heights neccessary but acurate scales are a nightmare. With one or two dogs entered in a variety class this rule has always bugged me.
