Badminton Horse Trials - Cancelled.

Horse&Hound

The organisers of the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials have had to cancel the event due to the heavy rainfall in recent weeks.
A statement issued this morning (30 April), said:

"The recent exceptional rainfall has left the ground at Badminton totally waterlogged and partially flooded.

"Further rain is due this week leaving no chance of the ground drying out.

"Very sadly therefore the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials has been cancelled."

Sponsors and riders will be refunded "as soon as is practical", as will exhibitors and spectators who have bought advance tickets.

The last time Badminton was cancelled due to adverse weather was in 1987. It also fell foul of the British climate in 1975 and 1966. In 1963, the three-day event was turned into a one-day contest, because of the state of the ground.

Whilst a shame for the riders, owners, spectators etc, I think it's a very wise move!

Lots of other BE Events being cancelled, I'm surprised at those still running, Moreton Morrell has gone but Broadway are still taking entries, mind you they're on a good hill!

As said already many BE events/XC events/outdoor shows have already been cancelled due to too wet or dry ground conditions.

Big shame as I enjoy watching events like badminton, but the ground is too dangerous

I agree it's a real shame, I love watching Badminton each year! Though it's definitely the right choice in terms of safety.

Horse safety first!! Fortunately common-sense has prevailed It is just so unfortunate for this to happen prior to our Olympics. I do feel sorry for William Fox-Pitt who won't now have the chance to be able to complete the 'triple' having won Burghley and then the Lexington, Kentucky (he's getting 'old') however a small price to pay for safety.
It presumably will also effect 100s of businesses i.e stall holders and all of the local B&Bs who must all be feeling the pinch with the recession anyway.
All of you who have been to watch in person will appreciate the size of the fences, for those of you who haven't, I don't think the TV coverage shows the ENORMOUS size of the course ,,,,,, it's HUGE
