im trying to find out what the options are if it is peritonitis- the vet was obviously rushing through as he wanted to get him back in- he did say if it is he doesnt have much chance of survival..but how much is not much? Im wondering whether he can be referred somehwere for specialist treatment :S I dont know where i find out about that :S

Fingers crossed he pulls through from this.

I dont think it will be a case of referral, as far as I understand its down to treatment NOW , as to whether they can reduce the infection.

Lets hope they can.

P.S.. I wonder if they are trying to prepare you for the worse, as peritonitis excruciatingly painful, and if its gone fo far, they may feel it best for him to be out of pain.

I dont know, Only know someone (human ) who had this and it was not nice at all.

just heard from the vets- hes being taken back in for surgery- suspected peritonitis or similar. Hes in an immense amount of pain and has a really high heart rate.
Vet said hes hoping hes just a wimp(i told him he doesnt deal with pain well!!) but realistically its likely to be bad and warned me to expect a call while hes on the table so he isnt put through any more pain and woken up
Hi Layla, I am so sorry to read about your family dog Smoke , such a dreadful thing to happen.

If the problem now is peritonitis and it is being address by the vet at this moment all you can do is hope, there really isn't any specialist treatment which can help..

I am sure all who read this will be sending warm healing thoughts to Smoke and hoping he is strong and fit enough to pull through...xx

thanks

yes i realise they are preparing me for the worst.

Im struggling to understand the need to open him up again though..surely if there was infection or damage they wouldve spotted it last night(he was on the table till gone midnight)

He did say hes hoping hes just in so much pain cause hes a wuss and nothing more :S

When he was neutered he was depressed for 2 weeks and cried every time he moved when he had the stitches in!!

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst that's about all we can do but it is amazing how dogs can recover from these things and there is a good chance that he will. You just have to trust the vets. Thinking of you both x

Leyla I can only hazard a guess here based on previous experience that Smoke was opened up and any necrotic (dead) tissue was removed.
Sometimes after this is done the patient fails to respond as well as one would expect, this can be due to a further dying back of tissue and if this proved to be case then this too would need to be removed .
The patient may have been on antibiotics to prevent any spread of infection, sometimes they don't prove to be as effective as one would hope or haven't had sufficent time to work and the infection spreads, so action has to be taken and quickly .

Smoke could of course be having a slow positive response to the initial operation and your vet is being cautious..

Let's keep our hopes up anyway
I am sure when surgery is over you vet will be able to give a better explanation..

So sorry to read this..one of my Irish setters had bloat and we sadly lost him on the operating table. A few years later, at the very same age, his son Alfie had exactly the same thing, fortunately he made a full recovery, it was a very slow process, he was in the vets for a week and we thought we were going to lose him with depression a couple of times. He eventually came home as they felt that they could do nothing more for him and he never looked back.

I hope that he is going to also make a full recovery, I'm thinking of you xxx
