One of the theories is that because they are renowned for "Boxing" in play it influenced the name..

In all the books I have cant find another reason.

one of the earlier Boxers was called "Box" but I think they already had their name by then

Going out now, but will do a little reading when I get back

the book I have says it's because they have the tendency to use their front feet in playing and fighting.

And if I had a pound for everytime someone has said "I can see why they're called Boxers" I'd be rich!!

I found this -
http://www.crazypet.com/cdfunstuff/dogbreeds.htm

Boxer
The boxer’s name has perpetuated many myths about the breed. The dog did not get its name from the fact that it stands up and assumes the position of a boxer when fighting. In all likelihood, the name comes from the German word for “biter.”

Don't know if it is true though?

lol, thats what my pal at training said, about the boxing in play and I thought it had to be wrong,

what were boxers bred to do?

what I dont understand is, the breed would have been developed and characteristics would be in place to get the name boxer, but would a name for the breed not have came before all that? just a thought.

I reckon it's a mispronunciation of the original german word for the breed typically of the british lol!
Poodle comes from the german pudel, The white rhino is so named on an assumption that the word meant white in SA but actually meant wide so the white rhino should be the wide mouthed rhino! and of course the kangaroo naming 'myth'!
