Dogs in pubs

Hi All,

I was wondering if any of you take your dogs with you to the pub?

We're starting to get Ella used to that kind of environment and she's doing really well. I love seeing dogs in pubs when they're all relaxed and just end up asleep somewhere or saying hi to other people (obviously not if they're stressed or not comfortable in any way)

My boyfriend's family go to the great dorset steam fair every year and we were thinking of taking the dog with us this year. For the start we're going to take her to a few quiet pubs and then start increasing 'busyness' slowly. So yesterday we took her to a pub down the street from our flat and from the outside it looked well dingy, so thought it would be quiet and only a few people there. You'd think! It was lovely and there was a garden out the back with grass and also other dogs, so we had a pint there with Ella and she was great. Not stressed at all, more curious as to what's going on around her. She looked at the dogs a couple of times but they didn't come over so she didn't really care. She said hi to loads of people and as usual was the star of the crowd.

Hopefully we'll be able to make a pub dog out of her, she certainly seems to like the attention she's getting there

Lovely! Yes I love dogs in pubs...is there anything more British! A pint and pooch...lovely!

When Tonks was a puppy she was in the pub a lot meeting people and other dogs. I clicker train with both my dogs and with Tonks in pubs I clicker trained/shaped settle down, clicking for standing calmly, then sitting then lying down...and before you know it they're asleep. Might like to take a blanket for hard floors though.

We only go in pubs we can take the dog in, don't let her wander, she is always so good, goes to sleep if we are eating.

Best place you could take a dog to socialise it is a good pub! Hal when he was an 8 week old puppy was taken into our local and plonked down on the beer barrel next to the bar so that he was safely away from any germs as he hadn't had his jabs of course. Everybody coming to the bar to get a drink would coo over him of course, and he was the best, well-balanced, well-socialised dog that I have ever had. Both our current rescues were taken into the pub immediately we got them. Tai was absolutely fine, but Ben had issues and had to be taken away a couple of times but now is a very good boy.

Our dogs go everywhere with us - if dogs are not allowed, then we don't go!

And they also get used to seeing some people behaving a bit oddly...and smelling funny!

Yes I love to see dogs in pubs. We don't have many in our area that allow dogs unfortunatly.

When I lived in Newlyn, Cornwall, the local Fishermans' Arms had rings by every bench for attaching dog leads!

Indeed! Our's are well acclimatised though to the smell of alcohol and the effects it can have! Both have been trodden on and tripped over many times, not just by us, but by many a friend in the various pubs we take them to!

The Vernon Arms in South Repps, Norfolk, has those. And the Watermill Inn in Cumbria. Several pubs in Hampshire - I think the Pub with no Name near Petersfield is one.

To my mind, a pub that doesn't allow dogs is not a pub - just like a pub that doesn't allow children. Well behaved versions of both I love to see in pubs.
