Cleaning away 'eye gunk'?

What do people find is best to use to clean away the 'eye gunk' that gathers in the hair below my yorkies eyes?
I have read various different articles regarding grooming and some say to use wipes, others say comb it away with a fine comb - however, when it dries into the hair I would imagine combing it away would be quite uncomfortable.
I have been clearing it away with damp cotton wool pads...is this OK?
Thanks

With my Mini Schnauzers I just use my fingernails or a comb. Having more than one dog I find they tend to clean out each others eyes and ears.

I have an 11 year old Yorkie, and she is prone to eye gunk. I clean them with muslin pads and warm milk.

I pick off Coco's 'eye bogies' (as I call them!) off carefully with my fingernail, and use a baby wipe to remove any goo residue. Mini schnauzers like my Coco seem to get crusty eyes so i tend to do this every couple of days

Warm milk? I would never have thought to use milk for cleaning

Thats useful to know that baby wipes can be used - I have a house full of them due to having 2 small messy children! LOL

It's an old wives tale! My mum used to swear by milk for any problem with the eyes. I used to suffer with conjunctivitis when I was a kid, and she used to bathe mine with milk.

But, I do find it works well with Molly's eye gunk!

Hiya
I am a dog groomer, best practice i can advise is remove eye gew everyday with a warm pad or brush, 'diamond eyes' is available in most large pet shops and will help with tear staining and help keep fresh, follow instructions tho!

When I get small dogs to groom which have a build up of discharge from their eyes,I use a flea comb to get through the hair first and then wash with a towel or flannel soaked in warm water. In fact I do this to all the dogs I get in to groom which have this problem.

I just use make up removal pads with cool boiled water or eye lotion on the work doggies. I pick off my dog's eye bogies with my fingernails. Can't touch other people's dog's eye bogies though!!!!!
