Poor girl. My boy had this, we tried the rest route as well as hydrotherapy and cosequin but he had to have the TPLO on both legs in the end. He recovered really well though and people wouldn't believe he'd had it done to see him rocket around after they had healed.
Fingers crossed for you x

Hi Heidi.

I can understand your concern over cost and the desire to get a 2nd opinion.

We took on a rescue dog who ended up having to have both knees done and she wasn't insured (one knee already gone when we rescued her).

Our own vet was fantastic. He told us that we had two options:-
(1) if we'd have been insured, he would have referred us to the specialist, which would've cost in the region of £2k per knee. The specialist does nothing but these ops day in and day out and had something like a 99% success rate.

(2) as we didn't have insurance, he gave us the option of him doing the op himself. He does about 4 or 5 a month and has about a 90% success rate. He charged less than £500.

We chose to go to our vet and I have to say, he did a cracking job on both knees.

So, maybe you can find a vet like mine that has sufficient experience to do the op, but without being a specialist and charging specialist prices?

Fingers crossed for you and your dog.

I definately agree with Hydrotherapy for recovery. Ask your vet if they can recommend anyone to you. Its a great form of non weight bearing exercise

Our Springer spaniel had a TPLO op at the end of November. Cost £2700. He's doing really well now on lead walks only for a good while yet. Trouble is our insurance only covered £2500, so we're well out of pocket as he had £400 worth of xrays, bloodtests etc at our vet before being referred. I've now upgraded insurance!
