One night I was travelling home from my friends house. It was early October 2011 and the coldest night of the year so far. I like to drive on country roads and had picked a short cut to get home. I happened to pass a vehicle at the side of the road unloading a box. Sadly there'd been a run of fly tipping in the area so I made a mental note to call and report it when I got home. To this day I do not know what made me turn back, something just niggled in my brain, the box was small enough to fit in a bin, why fly tip it? They had nothing else in the back of the pick up.

So I turned back by which point the vehicle was gone. I got out of my car and opened up the box to find a shut down, terrified, freezing puppy covered in poo where he'd gone in his box. He was so small he fitted in one hand. I didn't want the box in my car, it was filthy but I couldn't put the pup in the back because my other dogs were in there and they were very intrigued by the squeaking thing in my hands. Luckily for me I had a bag that should have been used in a dog pram that I picked up second hand as a dog stuff bag for the car. It had a mesh top so I tipped that out, lined it with my jumper and plonked the pup in there.

I took him to the vets to get him checked and they said apart from being filthy he was fine. They reckoned he was about 7 weeks old.

I took him home rather than leave him in a cage at the vets, although they would have taken him willingly. He cried all the way home, to the point that I ended up driving with my hand in the bag!

Once home I set up a crate and settled him down. I was shattered and the big dogs were bored of him after a quick sniff.

I contacted the dog warden the next day but they weren't particularly interested, I kept him for his 28 days and he's been with me ever since. He's my little man and I adore him. He loves to learn, he's great with everything, spend 99% of his time offlead and it's entirely trust worthy. Most people tell me he is old before his time as he is so calm, I prefer to think that Bob and Binky taught him well before they passed away.
He's probably the most well socialised dog I've ever had because he was carted everywhere with me from the day I found him. He went to work where he met all sorts of animals and people, I really think that made a difference.
Well thanks a bunch jen! I am wallowing in my bath playing on my phone relaxing. Read that and now have tears in my eyes! Some of these stories should carry a warning!

Okay here is my rescue story.
6th June 2013 my beloved SBT Sal died as the vet injected her my heart broke.
On the 8th June 2013 I rang SBT welfare and said we could be a foster home. The lady rang back and said "we have one who may be ideal for you"
On 9th June 2013 We collected Bella, a 6 year old SBT and no way was she going anywhere again.
We believe she had a good home as a pup/youngster and and was let go for reason - got a home which was far from ideal and has the scars to prove it. Got onto rescue radar and was rehomed they had to return her and she was rehomed and the chap was not ready for another dog after loosing his so back she went......and out to us.
Basically she needed a home and I have a home......we are two parts of a puzzle she needed me I needed her. End of story and the start of the story.

I have a story about a rescue in 1980 when we were living in South Africa.

One afternoon my younger son rushed into the house and asked me to give him 50 cents. When I asked him what he wanted the money for he said he was in a hurry and would explain when he got back. Half an hour later he returned carrying a odd looking puppy which was smothered in ticks and fleas. I asked him where he'd got her from and he told me he'd bought her from Moses our old Angolan gardener. "What's Moses doing with a puppy"? I enquired and was told he was fattening her up to make a dog curry!

As I was newly divorced and could barely afford to feed two sons, two dogs, two cats, ten mice, six snakes, a turkey and a bullfrog I told him he could keep her until he found another owner for her. The following morning when I opened the back door the puppy was sitting there with her head cocked to one side and this happened for several days and she had such a funny appealing little face that in the end I gave in and told my son we would keep her.

My son named her Whiskey and she grew up to be one of the lovliest and most affecionate dogs I've ever owned.

Lovely stories everyone, tinged with a little sadness

Just over 5 years ago now I went to Cyprus to work in a dog rescue for 2 months.
2 weeks in and Stone arrived at the shelter at 18 months old.
His owners (moved over from England about 8 months previously) were killed in a horrible car accident - 3 days later, the relatives brought 3 of their 5 dogs in. There was Stone, a HUGE beautiful weimaraner and a HUGE greyhound, and two huskies that were rehomed to a family member. Weimie and greyhound were homed together to one of the other volunteers. I spent a lot of time with Stone as he was so confused - we hung out for hours every day. He came in in beautiful condition but lost so much weight and muscle in the shelter. It was a puny thing with a big head that crawled on his belly out of the airport
I was meaning to get another GSD when I got home....never imagined I'd ever had a white one!
He was very timid but is a completely different dog now.
I am still in contact with his previous owners parents who live in Cyprus - they've sent me photos of him as a pup!
They got him at 4 months - he was seized from a house in Bexhill on Sea by the police with a litter sister in a terrible state and totally terrified - taken to a vet there and Stone went home with one of the nurses there and the policeman took the little girl.
He was born over here as the relatives gave me all his papers and pedigree etc - I have been able to contact the breeder (not a particularly reputable one) to tell them I have him and he is safe now. Not that they were particularly interested!

I felt a bit guilty bringing him home as it cost a fortune, and I could have rehomed about 8 dogs over here for that much, but I totally fell in love with him and just couldn't leave without him.
He has not been without his problems - he has terrible arthritis in his elbows - he is now a happy chilled out friendly boy.
We have been inseparable since the day I laid eyes on him

Just arrived at the shelter

First day home 6 weeks later - skinny minny

Now

Hard to believe he will be 8 years old next year!
His old owners parents still send him birthday and xmas cards every year without fail, enclosing a fiver each time to buy him something. I call and email them with updates and photos - they are so lovely.

Just read Mummy2Max's story.

Should be feeling happy really as you gave her such a wonderful life after such an appalling start.

Not sure I can read more than one of these in a sitting
