Keep out the chill!
I post this somewhere every year, so you may have seen it before - it's worth posting again, though!
CHILLI VODKA
One bottle vodka (any will do, but the better quality the voddie, the better the result)
One thin chilli
Wash the chilli, then score its skin with a knife. Try not to cut it right through. Tie a few inches of thread to it and lower it carefully into the vodka (you're going to use the thread later, to pull the chilli out).
Stand the bottle at room temperature for 24 hours, shaking it gently at intervals.
Now, remove the chilli (if you don't, the voddie will get hotter and hotter until it's scorchingly hot). You can still use the chilli, e.g. to make curry.
Put the bottle in the freezer for at least 24 hours (and keep it there in between uses!).
This is sold commercially in Russia, as "Pertsovka", and it can be blastingly hot. It's best to be wary with your first taste, and it's wise not to have too much (or you'll need to put the Andrex in the fridge). It is, however, excellent for relieving a stuffed-up nose - and, mixed with lime cordial and ginger beer, it's Thai cooking in a glass!
