Best age to neuter male GSD

So, I've been thinking about doing the unspeakable (as one lad to another, how I can I do this to my buddy!!! ).

However, when I've reasearched I have found conflicting advice

(1) neuter before sexual maturity (apparently 7-12 months for a GSD)

(2) neuter after fully grown @ 2 years old.

Can you advise?

Temprament, Health and the conditions of the Rescue are all very important to me in making this decision.

(PS no way I'm taking him to the Vet for that job - Margaret's already been told she's taking him when the dark day comes!!!)

Razzle is still entire. He needs his testosterone just to get through the day.
If you don`t have an entire bitch and are not having problems, I don`t really see why you are neutering. The health advantages from neutering males are not nearly as much as for females.

eta - because of problems with growth plates, I would never neuter before maturity.
In addition, no fearful male should be neutered until the behaviour is addressed IMO.

Thank you, it's a condition of the Rescue that he is neutered. Intersting point about the testosterone to give energy - I intend to do WT with him

Then I would leave it as long as possible, have they given you a time scale .

I wonder how much authority they really have in enforcing such conditions.

Surely in law, you have bought the dog . so he would classed as your property.

Just thinking out lound

Thanks. I guess I will fulfill the Rescue's wishes as a matter of principle. They have been brilliant with me and I'm sure will be supportive in advising. Ta.

Personally if he were mine(and if he were mine I wouldnt have him done) as he is a rescue I would probably leave him till he was at least 2 he needs to mature mentally and physically IMO

Nope. By signing the contract, the rescue still has legal ownership over the dog, you're just merely his carer with the costs (well, that's what it is with Harley, and other rescues I know of)
