Be careful putting the signs up Azz. That can increase your liability. I've heard the popular and safest sign to use in the UK is the No Entry signs. Ask around before you put anything up. The working dog boards would know. Post that on M and B. I've seen this discussion before from UK residents.

Yes I like the idea of 'DO NO ENTER' - I may get some peace and quiet then

Hmmm, not too sure of the consequences of signs! Believe it or not, under the law (UK), you have a "duty of care" towards the burglar! You could be open to a damages claim if the burglar gets bitten, even if there is a sign! I've heard it said, too, that a warning sign can be taken as meaning that you know your dog is dangerous. To my mind, this is totally crazy, but it appears to be the case. We live in crazy times!

However, I was browsing through a US Border Collie site (didn't bookmark it, though ) where I saw one I liked - a pic of a BC, with the words "I can make it to the gate in 2.8 seconds - can you?"

One thing I do have above my door, though, is a small terracotta plaque (made at Wells Cathedral!) which has a rudimentary dog on it, surrounded by the words "Cave canem" (Latin: "beware of the dog"). As it's in Latin and not in English, it has no legal implications. Even though most who come here can't understand the words, they get the picture!

I've discussed this before and I'm sure the conclusion that we came to ( with the help of plod ) was that you need something like'' Be aware '' of dogs rather than ''beware'' as the latter implies that there is something to be wary of
I have on the side gate -''caution dogs running free '' ( I always want to add ....''with gay abandon '' )
I have also seen at our local garden centre one that said ''when this gate is shut there are loose dogs behind it ''
But I think as someone else mentioned the onus is on you to inform the would be burglar that there is a dog about

Murphy is right...it's the BEWARE wording that you need to worry about. There was a successful lawsuit here in the US a few years back. The ruling was that because the sign stated Beware of Dog then therefore, the dog owner was aware that their dog would bite!! I think the injured party was awarded a huge sum of money. Crazy world we live in.

Anyway, it is accepted practice to have sign saying Dog on Premises or Dog on Property.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth.

I would think Guard dog would increase your liability even further because the words guard dog could be construed as a dog specifically trained for guarding purposes.
