How much can puppies walk? (11 week terrier X)

How far can he walk?
We went for a 15-20 min walk before (would have been about 10 mins at "normal" speed :P ), and then a 5 min stroll before, but would it be okay to go for another "20" min walk? (would again be like 10 mins walking at normal speed).

He is a JRT x shih tzu - just over 11 weeks old.
He is full of energy, but I don't want to do any damage?

I think the general recommendations for on lead walks is 5 minutes for every month, although they can obviously run around the garden and exercise off lead as well as that.

40 minutes is too much walking for an 11 week old puppy. You need to slowly build up their endurance over a period of months. Being 'hyper' is just typical puppy behaviour and doesn't mean that he needs to be walked again.

I would stick roughly to the 5 minute rule.

As long as they don't show signs of being tired keep on going. I have never seen any problem. The puppies I walked for miles were OFA good or better on their X-Rays.

I never force them on if they show signs of being tired. I have had to carry them home while still small. The dog guide school doesn't give us any limits on how much walking. They do say to limit running and jumping and keep them lean.

Which guide dog school doesn't give you hard & fast rules on how to exercise their puppies ??

To the OP please don't doas Labman advises.

Stick to the 5 minutes per month of the puppies age per walk & no more than 2 walks per day.

My neighbour has a young whippet & did just that & now at 8 months of age, she can walk completely around the village(which takes around 30 minutes)& has some free running as well in the middle. She is growing up correctly & is such a well balanced puppy. Obviously at the moment she is walked in the early morning & on an evening

I stick to the 5 min rule too and have 3 big dogs... the last is 11 months old now and she gets an hour free running a day, she will be unlimited once she gets to 18mths, because her growth will be finished by then...
I think I gave her 10-15 minutes onlead walk at 11 weeks, just to socialise her with other dogs and people... she was offlead at 12 weeks though!

To the OP, Joedee at the most may have 1% of the knowledge of the professionals whose advice I rely on. Some answers are based on what somebody pulled out of their butt a long time ago. Others are based on research and extensive, documented experience.

Please ignore this advice

It's 5 mins for every month, so 10 minute walks will be fine for your gorgeous boy x
