6th of june

it's the 6th of june today, spare a thought for all the boys who took part in the normandy landings on 6th june 1944. most of them were only in their early 20s, and made the supreme sacrifice so that we can live in freedom today !!

Agreed, there is always talk about people saying some random sports/film/music star are their heros but in my opinion these are true heros who laid their lives on the line for their country and freedom we have today.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness in posting this thread.

Do not call me hero,
When you see the medals that I wear,
Medals maketh not the hero,
They just prove that I was there.

Do not call me hero,
Now that I am old and grey,
I left a lad, returned a man,
They stole my youth that day.

Do not call me hero,
When we ran the wall of hail,
The blood, the fears, the cries, the tears
We left them where they fell.

Do not call me hero,
Each night I stop and pray,
For all the friends I knew and lost,
I survived my longest day.

Do not call me hero,
In the years that pass,
For all the real true heroes,
Have crosses, lined up on the grass.

Thank you for posting this thread. It was so thoughtful. My dad was one who landed on Gold Beach. They were true heroes.

my lad is a lance jack at the army cadets recently they were affilianted to the british leagion, there was an official ceromony to mark the merge.
of course we attended with louis and you sat mixing with the old boys, whom started sharing their life stories with the cadets and believe me its very humbling.
1 of the old boys said to louis wear the badge with pride ( 1 on the brazard to show the link) he replied i always do, which as a mum was nice to hear, that he does have respect for the old boys and know what they endured for people of today.
they are now making it a monthly event for them to get together and spend time with one another young and old, i can't see how it can do any harm for the cadets or the old boys, it shows them some teenagers of today do really care.

Great post.. all too often forgotten in these days of greed and selfishness. I remember my Grandad telling his tales as if it were nothing, no big deal. Hero's every one...
