Puppy scratched himeself [neosporin?]

Theo has scratched himself....I did a quick google search and NEOSPORIN keeps coming up as an antibiotic that can be put on dogs and will cause no harm if licked.

Any thoughts?

Louie scratches himself all the time - he likes to go through the bushes idiot.

He should be fine with a little anti-septic you have in the house - never harmed our dogs, just dont let him lick it off when you've put it on.

Of course if it is a deep one I would get him checked by a vet.

But dogs have their own antiseptic in their saliva so he should be fine if you let him lick it - but watch he doesnt go overboard as he can make the wound worse by licking too much

Id advise you not to give anything like that to a dog. If its a scratch Id use savlon cream.

Because you are not a vet and what you sometimes read on the net can be very dangerous! If you think you are qualified to administer anti-biotics to your dog through his skin thats up to you. Dogs can have reactions to Neosporin and if so the wound will become a LOT worse and so may your dog.

Why would you suggest savalon cream then?

Are you a vet?

Savlon cream is safe, on numerous occasions my Vets have suggested it for small cuts sustained by my own dogs whilst out working, Ive used it safely for over 15yrs! but if you want to take it to the extreme Jols, take your dog to a Vet!

Hi Jols, as with humans/other animals the overuse of antibiotics in dogs can lead to antibiotic resistance.

There is no need to use antibiotics for minor medical problems and certainly not unless advised to do so by a vet.

For minor cuts and scratches a saline solution to wash the area is all that is required, the dog's body will do the rest.
