I never pick my mini-mutt foster up. It`s a dog, not a handbag.

Also picked him up when our walk finished at 100m of "Grass Verge" beside a narrow, fast, take your life in your hands country road. The grass verge was thick knee high thistle with the odd nettle where space allowed. Didn't seem fair to drag him through it.

When I handle small dogs I OFTEN pick them up.

To put them in the car
To put them on the table eg vet
To hand them over to someone else say over a fence if they are too small to jump.
Clean their teeth
Brush them

Just seems like basic common sense to me, but maybe I am just weird.

I cannot imagine a time where I would NEVER pick up a small dog!

I think there is a difference between picking a small dog up to lift them into the car, put them on a table etc and picking them up to just carrying them around.

Yep there is, there is also a difference between carrying around a dog because you prefer to carry it per se and carrying a dog to protect it from harm or if it is over tired!

(Or of course ill/lame/old)
