The vet was really nice but yet another that we hadn't seen before but he was a lot older than the usual ones we see and seemed to explain things better so i had more confidence in him!

Anyway the vet said that we should consider how much it's raised in a year and consider that it could continue to do this each year and cause him problems later in life in the sense that if it gets bigger he could knock it and damage it more etc etc.

He said he doesn't think it's tumour of any sort as he's had it from birth and they're generally not born with tumours.

He advised doing the biopsy which will test for lots of different things but will also give an indication of whether it could grow more or whether it will stay as it is.

He said his gut instinct would be to remove it now whilst he's still young but in doing so they'd have to send him to a specialist to effectively reconstruct his head as there would be an open hole left and they'd have to move other skin to fill it in like a graft I guess. I'm not entirely sure i want to go down this road and will only do this if it HAS to be removed.

He reckoned that if he'd had it removed when he was younger it would've been a lot easier so now i feel p*****d off that in all the times we've been to the vets none of the other vets have ever shown any concern about it which also leaves me feeling confused as to why one vet thinks it should be removed but several others have never made any comment.

I explained to him that I only want the best for Monty and that I don't want to put him through anything unnecessary which he said was understandable.

So now he's booked in for the biopsy under sedation which the vet mentioned about a million times that "it isn't free of risks" which really helped ease my nerves. I've never left him at the vets before so it's a new experience for me and for Monty. He hates being enclosed in small spaces so don't know how he'll cope with being shut in a cage - probably my fault for never using a crate with him.

I know the biopsy is the best thing to do at this stage but I can't help feeling worried about it and that we should've done something sooner.

Sorry for the long post and the rambling, i'm just generally a bit stressed with several situations at the moment.

Thanks to everyone who's shown interest in this thread and Monty.
hello,
think this is sensible course of action, just to say as well that Bruno had a biopdy under sedation and had no problems other than being dopey and shaky when I collected him, however I was called to collect him early as he was making such a fuss in the cage, and stressing the other dogs.

So I am sure your vets wouldnt let Monty get stressed and would call you to collect him if he wasnt behaving well. Its worse for them if they are a nightmare so they wont leave him to stress. so dont you stress too much !!!

hope all goes ok

Thanks for the post. I warned them that he probably wouldn't cope well with being shut in a cage so they said they'd ring as soon as he was ready so have also booked a day off work so I don't have to leave him there all day.

I know I'm probably being incredibly OTT about it but he's my first dog and this is the first time I'll be leaving him at the vets. I got upset just thinking about it last night which is rare for me as Rich often refers to me as The Ice Queen!

I'm just going to get him to the vets first thing and then hopefully he'll be the first to go in and can come home sooner.

I'm so so sorry I've missed all this. You poor thing and poor Monty. I know it's such a worry.

I have no added advice to what's been given. Just wanted to pass on massive hugs to both of you and wish you the best of luck for Wednesday xx

Me too - I haven't been online much lately and didn't know about all this .

Very sorry to hear how miserable poor Monty has been, he is such a gorgeous boy. I do hope he feels more himself soon.

It's only natural to fret about how he will cope at the vets, try not to worry overly much though. I am sure they have lots of experience with a multitude of different dogs and will help him through this stressful process.

TBH, it is more likely you will be more stressed out than him

I do hope the biopsy comes back negative - the vet seems pretty sure there is nothing sinister there so that is great news.

Hugs to you both xxx

Well Monty has been for his biopsy today and has come through the procedure and sedation ok although he is now incredibly miserable.

Basically the vet said his lump is consistent with a cebacious (sp?) cyst and when they first made an incision he felt like it could just be drained.

However on further inspection he actually has hair growing under the skin and almost has two layers of skin growing. Inside there are what the vet described as a cluster of "cysts" and thats why they couldn't just drain it. His gut feeling is still that it will need to be removed but that it is best done by a soft-cell surgeon with the reconstructive surgery to follow but will know more in 7-10 days when the lab send the results.

The nurse said Monty was an angel today and didnt make a fuss at all which is impressive as he's never been left at the vets and he's never been in a crate before - i am very proud of him for that. Seems he ruined his good behaviour when he saw me as he got over-excited and bashed his head which opened his wounds and bled everywhere in the vets! They chose not to stitch the wound as the vet was concerned stitching might increase infection risk -seemed odd to me but i guess he knows best.

So he's currently "coned" up in front of the fire and not happy about it. Will post some photo's in the pics section.

Forgot to add that i rang his breeder and she was quite upset about the whole thing and i felt pretty bad about that as it's not her fault. She's always been fab about Monty and we visit her regularly so was natural for me to keep her involved, she's also planning another litter from Monty's mum so all this info is relevant just incase it happens again.

I'm glad to hear he came through it fine - I'm sure he'll be bouncing around again way before you consider him fully fit
