Found An Old Dog Book, How Some Breeds Have Changed... *Various Dog Breeds*

The Observer's Book Of Dogs was a book I spent many, many hours thumbing through as a kid. Mad on dogs I was!

It was lovely to find it and although many breeds haven't changed it's interesting to see some that do look different. I thought I'd scan a select few in to share.

First off is the English Springer, obviously! This picture to me is what an ESS should look like. Whether it's correct re angles and the breed standard I don't know, but I just love it.

Doesn't the Irsih Water Spaniel look different though?

Tha Bassett Hound, a bit different now I think.....

The Clumber, not as heavy as todays show type from this pic.

The Bernese Mountain Dog????

A controversial breed here, so I'm saying nowt. Joedee would be on me before I could say "Look at that Banana Ba....."

And finally the Bulldog.

Hope you enjoyed them as much as I am.

Very interesting thanks for sharing.
the BMD looks leggier than Ollie but I have seen them with longer legs than Ollie I think his breeder breeds more for how they look as working type not show type although she does show.

Can't believe how similar the springer is to the cocker in that picture. The ones I see these days looks very different, although we only get workers round here normally.

The BMD is totally different!

Isn't it so interesting to see!

Wow, some breeds have changed so much (and not all for the best )

I think the Bully looks way better than the ones bred today, to me they are too exagerrated now.

I know not one you picked.... but the Brittany almost looked like a pointer. Maybe they still look the same but the ones I have met have had quite different faces.

ETA - IWS looks like ones I have met.

The Brittany looks to have changed a lot as well, looks taller and leggier.
Was there a Welshie in there by any chance.

It looks a lot lighter framed in that pic, almost Collie like?

It's interesting isn't it? It just shows how the Springer and Cocker were once the same dog. It also shows how much the two have been exaggerated for the show ring. Look at the Springers coat and ears!

Yes I think if the Bulldog in that pic had a slightly longer muzzle I'd be quite happy to own one and not worry about it breathing. There's a Rottie too, I'll scan it in. They haven't changed at by the looks of things!

The IWS in that pic looks like a Spaniel, all the ones I've seen at shows don't really look like Spaniels anymore. Perhaps it's just me!
