Hi Linda

Rocky had a Slocum TPLO when he was around 2 years old, and once it was done he didn't have any major problems with it again.

Do you know how bad the cruciate is? If it's snapped then you won't have much choice but the op, if it is torn strict rest 'might' help - but it depends on how bad it is tbh.

Here are some threads that might be worth reading:

Slocum TPLO Plates - anyone had any experience of them? (Rocky is having them).

Those of you with TPLO experience

Ruptured Cruciate Ligament (update @ post 40)

Cruciate Ligament Injury - Is Surgery Always Necessary?

Ozzy is lame again (cruciate ligament injury + update)

Ben's been in the wars - torn Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)

It's always a worry leaving them for an op - I cried when I got back home as the look on his face when I left him was just so sad... but he was only away for a day, and they are knocked out or on strong pain killers for most of the time so it probably just whizzes by for them.

If you are willing to travel to Surrey, Middlesex is nearer and I can highly recommend Gerard Clark at Willett House, Staines who's reputation for TPLO surgery precedes him. My neighbour has had both legs (back) done on her lab 'Meg'. The first one was done about 9 months ago and the second one done a few weeks ago. I went round to see Meg the day after the op and it was fantastic (she had a morphine patch on the side of her) and was using her leg tentatively. The site of the op was unbelievably neat and looked as though it had been done weeks ago.
You'd have to ask about costs, and I think it was certainly more than £1800 which sounds very very reasonable to me.

I am from Essex and I took one of my dogs to Dick Whites at Newmarket for TPLO.
Yes they are expensive but you have some of the top European vets there that specialise in certain fields and the dogs care is amazing.
I can't recommend them highly enough.
