Boxer owner (dog with itchy back)

Hi everybody great to be among all you dog lovers. Was reading the site earlier today and my boxer has an itchy back, we reckon the cause of it is a tree in our garden (weeping willow) Most years we cut the tree back so as "George" cannot rub his back off the branches but this year we were too late, and George is scratching. I rang my vet and he said it was ok to give him "Piriton" anybody got any views on this.
