Why me and hedgehogs?

Some of you may remember that I rescued a hedgehog - an abandoned baby - in July, rehabilitated him only for him to drown on the pond.
He had been brought to me by a family in the village as they had heard I have taken on sick/injured hedgehogs before, although sadly as is often the case by the time they get to me they are so sick they don't survive.

Anyway, about an hour ago there was a little knock on the front door. I opened it to find a few very young children (I don't think they should be allowed to play out alone at 6yrs) who told me there was a hedgehog on an opposite garden.
Having recently been very upset at the loss of Hugh and the previous 'hog I was reluctant to get involved, so I asked why were they telling me. The reply was "because you know about them" - how could I not even just look?

There, on a garden a few yards from my house, was a 'hog having a doze in the middle of the lawn. I picked it up "wow, does it hurt?" they all asked "yes, very prickly" I replied!! I had a quick look, seemed fine - eyes, nose and mouth clear, breathing nice and steady. I put it in the corner of my front garden and it promptly walked off and went through the fence to what we call The Spinney. We are lucky as our house is next to a farm, the land immediately next door is purposely kept natural, beyond that fields for ages.

It was walking fine, so I am hoping that it is OK and finds enough to eat to get a little bigger for the winter, it should do, there is plenty about.

I will soon become known as The Hedgehog Lady!!

I love hedgehogs, they were some of the hundreds of animals I used to fetch home as a child.

I still love seeing them now on my walks.

Well done to you for doing such a marvolous thing, looking after hurt animals. :smt023

You lot are so lovely!

The hedgehog has been back out the front again this afternoon! It looks fine, I think it is probably out getting extra food to ensure it has plenty of reserves for hibernation. I have discovered the gap in our fence, so will ensure it stays a gap!
