Dog got attacked - what now

I was walking with my bitch and there was one dog in yard who has always been on about 3m chain and barking aggressively when we were passing. This day it was barking as usually but when we were passed its yard, it pulled itself free with the chain, jumped over fence and attacked my dog.
Attacking dog was at least two times heavier than mine and by the time I got them separated had my dog some bitted and a bit bleeding holes in her back and side. She was trembling couple of hours afterwards at home.

This day there were nobody home with that dog. Now I wonder should I keep looking contact with owners (this dog is usually home alone) or just let it be?

Hi Moniq sorry to hear your dog was attacked, I hope it is ok now and that the wounds have healed. I do not know the laws are in your country (Estonia) about keeping dogs under control but I would report the attack to the authorities and the owner..it this dog is normally kept tied up it may be unsocialised and aggressive, next time the attack could be on a child .

I am so sorry to hear about this. It must have been a terrifying experience for you and your dog. I do hope that she makes a swift and full recovery and that she suffers no long-term psychological effects.

The incident should be reported to the authorities. Do you have the equivalent of Dog Rangers/Dog Wardens, people whose job it is to deal with stray dogs and dog attacks? If possible I would leave communication with the owners of the aggressive dog to officials of your Council or Police. Did you take her to the vet as that would perhaps provide some evidence that she was attacked? Did anyone else witness the incident?

If the authorities cannot, or will not, take action then you should inform the owners of the dog of what happened. It would probably be best to do this by letter rather than calling on them which could be distressing for you if they are unpleasant people.

Do keep an eye on the bite wounds. Keep them bathed with saline and watch out for any signs of infection.

Now has passed two days from attack. I didn't take her to vet but I have put on some medicine what I got from vet. Today my dog is a little stiff, but she is acting normally again and wounds are healing.
Nobody witness the incident - it was rainy day and this was summer-cottage area thus most houses were empty. I haven't seen owners of other dog yet - they live there but they are just not home.

Hi Moniq, sorry to hear about the attack and hope she is feeling better today.

My wife was walking our Shar Pei last night and he was attacked by two Staffordshire Bull Terriers... [admin edit: please note I have copied Declangs post and created a new thread for it here: http://www.dogweb.co.uk/talkdogs/sho...d.php?p=342235 as I thought more people would see it in a new thread...]
