hi,,,my staffy when he was a pup,,used to copy our cat and go in the cats litter tray,,try putting the litter tray in the crate and see if that helps,,once he does it once or twice,,gently move it towards the door and then outside,,,
hope it helps,,but thats how we did it lol

Update
The Vet called, they did a culture and it came back positive for a UTI.
Apparently the sample was diluted so didn't immediately show.

I feel bad that im happy she has one!

Hi Buck it's good you have a reason for the behaviour .
I would continue to observe the regime of cleaning and taking out I mentioned in post 3 above to reinforce wanted behaviour and it should then become the norm when your dog is better.
