What a horrible night (long)
Goodness me, please can I rate my evening as 0/10???
When OH got home from work this afternoon, Murphy's face was all swollen up. He looked more like a Shar Pei than a Boxer. He booked him in to the vets for this evening.
We figured allergic reaction to something.
Just as I was on my way home from work, I got a phone call from OH, who was in an absolute state, having an asthma attack. His words to me were "Shell, Shell, I think he's dying, oh god, what should I do..."
Max had been playing outside with Murphy, under the supervision of my hubby, when he almost jumped at the wall, fell over, couldn'ty get up and collapsed. When OH ran over to see him, he was all dazed and pacing around. He had really wobbly legs and couldn't stand up.
OH rang me, so I instructed him to put Max in the car, and I would ring the vet and warn them he was coming over. Oh was so panicked that he had an asthma attack on the way to the vets
By the time he got to the vet, Max was fine, sat up in the car, as if nothing had happened
But when the vet examined him (they got whisked straight in as we'd called it in as an emergency) he was OK, but snapped at the vet when she tried to examine his mouth. Very unlike Max, who loves our vets!
The vet concluded that he'd had some sort of seizure, a very small/short one. She said there were loads of things that could have caused it, but that Max was fine in himself. Normal temperature, normal heartbeat, eyes and gums normal.
She said that the snapping and odd behaviour was the post-ictal stage (thanks Dogsey'ers, I knew this from other people's posts).
She said that we could do nothing and see if he has another fit, get a full blood panel done to see if it was caused by something metabolic (liver shunts?), or go the whole hog and get him referred to a neurologist.
We're definetely going to get the blood work done, but I think we may "wait and see" before we refer him to a specialist. The vet said he might never have another seizure again.
Murphy has had an allergic reaction to "something unspecified". He's had a little steriod injection and some antihistamines, and his face has already started to go down - phew!
Both boys have had a special supper of sardines mixed in with their food, have had a little walk down to the chickens with me and have gone to bed. To look at them, you'd not know we'd had such a stressful night.
