Hmm... ok...

Well I thought it sounded like a good idea to try but am a little worried about Takara's back. She's a stocky dog and has no back problems but I don't know enough about the dog's construction so would have to look into it further.

However, I am considering it simply because we're doing more lead walks and I'd only get her to carry things like my purse, some dog treats from the market, poo bags etc, nothing too heavy and as she's got a little porky recently it may help her lose some weight and be tired when we get home from a walk!!

I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be used on mals and similar breeds that were bred to pull and carry I'd just be a little concerned about smaller breeds that weren't bred with strong backs in mind. In an ideal situation I'd work Takara but I can't go buying a horse just for my dog!!

well I know dalmatians were originally bred to follow a carriage, so stands to reason they are built for work. I remember in my dobie days reading that Herr Dobermann used to put his money in bags around his dogs necks, I think originally all dogs were bred for some sort of work, we don't utilise their natural talents at all. I think the exercise is good for them to be honest. I see piccies sometimes of various breeds of dogs hitched to scooters and things alongside the Mals, so really this is no different in the scheme of things

@ mental picture of the TZBCs trying to tote a sheep across a field! On a lighter note, I see little wrong morally about "asking" the TZBCs to carry their biscuits home: after all, Mrs S and I pay for them, the TZBCs just eat them . Still, we have a car........

Seriously, though, I do think that anyone considering this activity should bear in mind the age of their dog - giving Fido an extra 2 or 3 kilos when he's a pensioner can't be kind.

It's a shame people can't stand by their convictions when it comes to the crunch eh Dawn !

I know the risks and the benefits............ and coment on such, but you don't even have a reason for implying it's cruel.

You don't have a logical reason for them not being used Dawn, you just want an argument............and you have the nerve to call me argumentative

Indeed, age should be a consideration, just the same as anything else.
