Veggies for dogs.

I feed my dogs a mix of complete dry food and tinned meat, but sometimes we have fresh veggies over after making our own meals. Which ones are ok to give to dogs? I`ve heard (but can`t remember where) that dogs can`t digest some veggies and that they are toxic to them. Like chocolate is. Any ideas?

I never gave my dog anything connected to the nightshade family as advised by the breeder,Potatoes, tomatoes also onions are not good, little bit of crushed garlic is ok,I also think the rule is not too many brassica type veg, broccolli etc.,as it can affect their thyroid.

Moderation is the word

As in people, nightshade plants are suggested to be avoided if suffering with arthritis, mine love tomatoes. I also give broccoli, cabbage, cauli, cooked spuds etc, talking a couple of tablespoons here not big bowls of the stuff as I said, in moderation

As Christine says all things in moderation and a good variety of foods helps to insure dogs get lots of different vitamins, minerals and trace element.
Regarding potatoes, as with humans they should not be fed to dogs if they contain any green parts and unlike other vegetables they are should be cooked.

Amy loves vegetables particularly peas carrots and broccoli .

Avoid onions. Small amounts of cooked onions or leeks have never presented a problem to mine but are not recommended to be fed regularly or in quantity. Same for garlic - a little is beneficial, a lot is not good

All veg should be blended in a blender/jucier etc before giving to the dogs since dogs cannot digest whole veg, this mimicks how the dog would get veg in the wild - the stomach of their pray.

Theres nothing stopping you giving it whole - it will not affect the dog in any way thats all, ie they won't absorb anything from it.

Greens such a kale also contain a lot of nutrients, be sure to blend to recieve any benefit though
