Laura's computer keeps turning itself off.

My daughter Laura (Lozzy) has been having a problem with her computer for a few weeks now. She is on it and then all of a sudden it will just cut out and go off. She said its been happening since we had a mini powercut a few weeks ago although mine got cut off too but was okay. Now its got to the stage where as soon as you start it up it's lucky if you can get to the desktop before it cuts out on you. I was going to run some scans on it but it won't even stay on long enough to do this. I don't think its an overheating problem because she has been at school all day and has only just turned it on before it went off again.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what might be wrong please.

ooooooooooo loads of things.

the powercut springs to mind, no offence here but i bet its not on a surge protected socket or if it is the surge protector needed replacing.
thus when you had the powercut you got a huge spike through the pc damaging one or more component.

to be the bearer of bad news its gonna need somethign replacing.

i have an initial feeling its the psu, no idea how technically minded you are here though ?

but its going to need things replaced and tested.

ie you start by trying a psu form a diff computer or buying a new one and if that solves it then the psu needs replacing obviously, however it could be a damaged motherboad, maybe ram or maybe pc card.

so it needs some specialisy attention.

if your clos i would come look but not sure where you are and i dont drive.

sorry.

Okay thanks Ceiron I will see if we can get someone to have a look at it. I can't remember if the socket she has is a surge protector one or not to be honest I know we got one but it might be Dan my son who has got it.

Looks like she will be hammering my laptop for a bit - she's revising for her exams this week.

Hi Ceiron,

Just been upstairs and looked and the socket she has got all her computer plugs in is a Belkin surgemaster so hopefully a power surge wouldn't have gone to the computer.

Anything else that you can think of? It's a Packard Bell computer and is only just over 12 months old.

the surgeprotector may be useless now btw, does it have an indicator light ?

if i isnt a surge then the best advice ican give to check is to boot the computer and as it loads stgraight away hit f8 until you get a window asking you for which safe mode to load into.

try his and see if you can laod into the simplest safe mode you can and if this then doesnt cause he computer to restart its a registry problem most likely, however if it does still restart then i would be inclined to say its still the psu.

tbh the psu still seems a likely culprit.lol

lemme know

p.s. i have home internet again

wooooooooo

Right just tried the F8 thing but it didn't bring Safe mode up it brought 3 items up - think the 2nd was Cdrom and the third was Realtrek agent or something - it didnt say safe mode anywhere. I have noticed there's a strange 'blobbing' sound coming out of the speakers just before it goes off as if the electic is coming and going or something - I know that sounds daft but it sounds like something being plugged out.

Hi,
It is your PSU - power supply unit, I have just replaced a one for a friend of mine, It only cost about Ģ15. But check first what the wattage rating is on yours before you go and buy a one. They are relatively easy to replace, four screws and it's out, apart from a few plugs etc that can only be fit together one way.
