Is a high protein diet good?

hi all,

I'm from Singapore. I have a shetland sheepdog. I'm glad to find this uk forum. As recent dogfood in Singapore is high in protein (22%, 24% even 30%), I'm starting to wonder if it's any good for our dogs? I realise Burns has only 18.5% though it's still not available in Singapore. Can anyone kindly comment if a high protein or low protein diet is good for dogs & also its implications/effects on our doggies. Thank you.

In my opinion no, but it depends what the protein is, if it is from grain then the dogs system can't use it.

The protein requirements depend a great deal on the age, size, and activity level of the dog, and the source of the protein is important. "The highest quality protein comes from eggs & milk, followed by meats, fish & cheese, and finally cereal proteins" (Evans & White). Too much protein can make a dog rather hyperactive.
