Milbemax- be careful!!!

Just wanted to warn about Milbemax!
Never trust what is written on the pack, I almost lost my Jack Russell! Calculate the dosage of the medicament accordingly to the dogs weight! I got the tablet from my vet for 5 to 25 kg dogs and mine was 7 kg. Then all the nightmare started. He suffered a lot, lost more than 30 % of his fur with the terrible wounds and burns. Finally it is over but he will have to live with terrible bald patches.

I have heard of issues when used on Collies, particularly Rough Collies.
What did your vet say ?

I am afraid that NO medication is without risk and dogs (and people) can have bad reactions to ALL sorts of wormers (and other medicaments).

Remember, THOUSANDS of people use this product with no ill effects, but there will always be animals which it does not suit.

I am sure his hair will grow back.

I imagine this was the type of wormer and not the dosage. Milbemax is to be avoided with my breed (border collies) unless they are tested free of the mdr1 gene, I'm not sure but I would imagine this gene can be present in other breeds aside from collies.

Hi everyone,

no that was not the type of wormer it was a problem of dosage. When he was a puppy he got the same medicament only small dosage. The problem is the range written on the pack it was 5 to 25 kilos. In this case it would have been better to take more puppy tablets according to his weight. Vet just saying it was overdose. And the hair will never grow back, that was like a very bad skin burn.

I had a similar experience dosing my dog with Advocate. She was at the lower end of the doseage range, but I gave what the vet advised.
Within 30 minutes she started vomiting.....that lasted for 2 days and she was bringing up blood. I really thought I was going to lose her. Very frightening.

very odd....as the usual 'reactions' are neurological (to the ops dogs reaction)

One vet said it was coincidence and not down to the Advocate. Another vet in the practice agreed, altho' unusual it was probably too high a dose that caused it.
