Sourcing rabbits...

I really want to get Jake some rabbits, but the ones from the butcher cost £4 each, which is just too much to be part of his regular diet. I would like to contact someone who hunts them and would maybe sell them for less, but I have no idea where to look. I have tried searching various things, but have had no luck so far.

I would like to source other things, such as pheasants too. I know a guy who shoots and uses his spaniels... So, I am thinking of asking him about where he shoots and if they have excess birds that they would be happy to sell on. I would like to look for other shoots too, but again, I don't know how to find out about them... I haven't found anything using google.

Does anyone know the best thing to search for, that would come up with this kind of thing? I know there must be information out there... I just can't seem to find it

1 look up your local clay pigeon shoot, many of them also shoot in season and go lamping.

2 Join NOBS you can find out about local shoots there

3 Visit your local gun/angling shop for info/ads.

4 Look in magazines such as Shooting Times for info

5 Look at BASC website

6 Look at some gundog forums for info

7 If you have a local agricultural store such as Mole Valley Farmers, Countrywide and look for ads or chat to the shop assistants

8 What estates are near you (not council or cars)

Do you know any keepers? Most trap and shoot rabbits every day of the week and would be only too happy to have some taken off their hands - especially for a bit of cash

If you were a bit closer I could ask here for you, but it is a bit of a trek!

Thank you will give them a try! I am hoping I can meet the spaniel man in the morning, he is usually in the park at the weekends when I am down but I will need to be down early tomorrow so might miss him...

I'm not sure how far away we are from each other, but I think it is a couple of hours

I don't know any keepers, but there must be some around here... It is just trying to find them that is the problem It is something that is difficult to know where to even start! I know a lot of people shoot them for population control, so they must quite like to get extras taken off their hands, and get that wee bit extra cash too I also think it is better for the rabbits, rather than be killed and just left.

Have you got a greyhound track near you? As some of teh helpers may have their own lurchers with whom they go lamping?

That is why I said contact clay pigeon shoot, people who like shooting (clays and real) will often cull rabbits too.

I'm not sure if I am honest There used to be a greyhound track in the next town, but I have never been and I'm not sure it is still open... My sister used to go every week... Will ask her if she knows...
