A very interesting article. I guess considering this:
For giant breeds, it goes up 20 percent each year after the age of 3.
I'm lucky I didn't lose my dane until she was 9.

Delighted your boy is home Karen, even if you are going to be eating bread and dripping for months.

GDV is a very contentious condition. the vets have never found a reason for this condition and the feeding stands have been dismissed as a possible cause.

a lot of dogs have had an underlying condition that triggers GDV and vets still dont test to see what could have caused it.
luckily i had a vet who did.

food, also, has never been found to be a trigger, whatever is fed.

i know we will always question ourselves on what we did wrong or what other factors cause this, but i really dont think it will ever be found unfortunately.

I remember rushing him to the vets with my Dad in the middle of the night, and the next morning he had a tube sticking out of his stomach, a sight I'll not forget. The next night the vet broke all regulations by allowing me to spend the night with him in the kennel...he was curled up on my lap all night.

Dad took over the next morning, but unfortunately poor old Winston's heart gave out...he was 12. He died with his head on my Dad's lap.

So glad you're little Jack is home...I have no advice on how to stop this condition, but know how you were feeling.
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that.

Thank you all for your lovely comments, experience's and advise.
Jack seems quite well considering what he has been through! It's just me! I am watching him like a hawk now every time he eats something!
The vet said feed little and often, so I normally feed twice a day, but I have split his to 4 times a day.
