Awwww Poor boy what a way to go but they're not the most agile of breeds and I know whenever mine have fallen in the pond they can't get out without help which is why the dogs only have access to it when we're down that end of the garden. Jeez when Tucson my Pug went in even I struggled to get her out and I was just about to go in after her when I managed to grab her.
