Yes but you're giving an example of a litter with complications.

Most breeders sell their pups for a hell of a lot more than £150

Not back in 1998! Besides stud fees are proportionately higher now, they never used to be the cost of a puppy but they are now so if you have a small litter then you are unlikely to make any money.
I would also like to point out that I gave details of all my litters, only one required a large vet bill but I reckon I pay at least 3 - 400 in vets bills a litter.

Whelping complications are more common than people think.

Which leaves me wondering how many actual reputable/ethical breeders there are out there instead of ones that just give that impression and say they are

So that would be the cost of approximately one pup.

Can I ask what the £400 goes on apart from worming, fleaing, microchipping and ultrasound?

It's a very low number sadly. People are quick to decieve and lie because they know the right things to say to make them look good.

Quite rare in my experience of preganant rescues.

If a bitch has problems whelping do you agree with breeding from her again?

In PRT it would have been more than the cost of a pup, in Poodles half the price of a pup but a stud fee is the cost of a pup. I sell my Poodles for £800 but they are not a high volume producing breed so once you take out the one I keep and the one that's the cost of the stud fee then another one the cost of vet bills, registering, microchipping, and general litter costs it doesn't leave you much.
Plus for me I'm importing 2 dogs which would cost me approximately 7 puppies to get my money back on that not taking into account any costs for travelling to view the dogs nor on going keep, grooming, health tests etc.

So say you have 5 pups, 1 pup = stud fee, 2nd pup = vet fees, food, resgistration, 3rd pup you keep. That still leaves £1600

You're not taking into account the cost of me buying and raising my dog to breeding age. The parent will be roughly the cost of the puppy and the raising to breeding age the same, plus show costs and so on.
Taking into account just the litter then yes it looks like a profit but if you took all costs into account then no. Subsequent litters from the same bitch then yes you will start going into profit but I only breed to keep and it is pointless keeping loads of pups from the same bitch so I tend to only have a maximum of 2 litters from a bitch, usually one.
