Canicross equipment etc

I been thinking, summer is on it's way (although will probably never arrive lol) and I want to tone up and improve my fitness, maybe even my diet too Sooo i'm thinking of running with the dogs, unlikely that I will actually do CaniX, not that I know much about what goes on.. but would like some advice on what gear people use or recommend; belts, leads harnesses, I can't afford nowt atm but hope to get some bits and bobs soon. Also needing to get running shoes which I think are soo ugly lol but I'll be needing em!

I run with my dogs, but don't do any formal Canicrossing. It's great fun even on your own, as the dogs seem to get that they are running as a team with you. I actually find it better in the colder months...in the summer the dogs get overheated too quickly.

I would say that your shopping list in priority order would be something like this:
1. Well-fitted harness for the dog
2. Portable drinking bowl for the dog
3. Cross-country running shoes for you
4. Sports bra
5. Canicross belt for you
6. Bungee lead with quick release clip to attach your belt to the dog's harness.

Snow paws were very helpful for the specialist equipment. There is a Canicross thread on here in the dog sports and activities section. There's also a very friendly site run by some enthusiastic beagle canicrossers which you'll have to google.

Thanks for your reply, I like the snow paw site and have had a look through their stuff. Oh and sports bra, forgot that!

All you actually NEED is a dog and a lead - you can even compete with a dog in collar and lead.

I use a walking belt and Manmatt shoulder harness from Snowpaw

harness of choice in our house is a snuggle pets one (found the 'yoke' deeper and it sat properly on my doober) we tried a x back harness but it was no good for us

i got the belt / bungee bit / line from snowpaw cost about £60 for the kit plus harness for pooch

its mega and my boy loves it we were out last night in a balmy -4 for a quick 5k under a full moon

I do a very small amount of running with Cooper and I use his Julius K9 IDC harness, an 8ft line I made and a walking belt I made.

Works well although when running I tend to have to gather up most of the line as he drops back and runs at my heel (in true carriage dog style)

Thanks all! I know I can run with em without equipment, and sometimes I do when out with them, but I deffo need decent shoes, as me knees and shins aren't great. Also I often suffer from bad back so want a good belt and shock absorbing lead. They both have harnesses which i'm sure will do fine for now. But I do like the look of the manmat one on snow paw's store..
