Back to Basics with Prince

Prince hasn`t really been progressing that much - he`s still an excitable lout, although a good natured lout.
Since Alfie has arrived I`ve had to admit that his behaviour on lead leaves an awful lot to be desired. This morning he was so daft (leaping about like a plonker) that Shamus got the raging hump and sat down and refused to move.
So I marched them all home where Shamus retired to bed in a snit and I took Alfie and Daisy out for a lovely calm walk with a bit of heel-work training for Alfie,
Then I took Prince out armed with a bucket of treats. We wandered across the road, we wandered back. Every time he squealed or leapt we returned to base. After a bit he got the idea and was a Good Boy for 5 minutes.
I shall persevere.
However, any suggestions as to how to increase attention span / lessen exuberance for a loon would be much appreciated.

If he is quite treat focused he might be receptive to clicker training, starting with clicks for being calm and then extending the length of time/situation required for him to get a click.

How about allowing him to be a loon for say 10 minutes, then do some training, another 10 minutes of looning, then play, training???

I think a few of the videos here may help
www.youtube.com/pamelamarxsen
E.g.
Go wild and freeze (it's a bit like teaching a dog to 'speak' to be able to capture and command 'quiet' - you teach the dog to get all excited on cue so you then have the opposite cue of calming down)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzM0nvlQPsY&feature=plcp

Building calmness around high level distractions

Calm with a dog playing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY0ELFRLprU&feature=plcp

Settle on the go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5lD4rczRIA&feature=plcp

She has other impulse control exercises too, like stopping door dashing, 'no mugging', and a rock solid leave it. Teaching self-control in any kind of exercise can help a dog learn it and apply it to all aspects of its life. She also does 'watch me' which is good for building focus on you. She's got quite a few videos on walking, e.g. loose lead, walking multiple dogs, etc.

Edit: Oh, also attention exercises, like the check in

Could you maybe do some 1-2-1 clicker training with Prince before your walk to wear him out a bit mentally first?
