WALKIES! My staff puppy wont walk

I got a stubourn staff puppy, (9wks) he dont jump 4 his lead like most dogs wd, he dont run from it either, but im worried he may see the lead as a bad sybol or punishment as he gets older.

On the lead he pull pull back and choke his self till his eyes go red, i stop obviously, but if i cant get him on a lead at a young age then i worry he wont be able to be taken on one in the future.

Is it a case of try try try again, or are staffs known 4 this behavior(i know they stubourn).

I would let him just be around the lead in the house first of all, treat and praise him so the lead means good things. i would then get a very light lead and put it in inside and again use lots of praise and treats. let him have the lead on inside with it trailing rather than him being taken somewhere by it.(obviously keep an eye on him so that he does not get caught on anything). I would then hold the lead and let him lead you around the house and garden treating him. I would also do soem recall with him on the lead so that he learns to stay with you when the lead is on.

I think small steps and lots of positive reinforcement will be the way to go with him.

Lots of dogs have issues with being on the lead to begin with, just because it is something new and different. I would try putting it on and letting him just walk about trailing it indoors to begin with. Once he finds this acceptable you can move on to holding while he just wanders about. He's probably still too young to go out yet anyway, so all the practise you can do indoors or in the garden will help. Encourage him to follow you around wearing it.

hiya we had our first pup last year i was also worried about the lead business!

i started by jsut clipinbg it on him & letting him play so he got used to the weight, then on different times i rescrited him by his collar, not tight or anything, but so he couldnt get away, then we he calmed down he got a treat!

then i walked him round the house as he wasnt allowed out till 12 weeks cos of the jabs, id walk him to each room make him sit then give him a treat, he got it after a few days.

then when we went out he wasnt bothered at all, if he pulled i turned the other way now and then he has to follow me, he doesnt pull anymore unless his super excited!!

good luck!

Super advice given, a lot of pups find a lead daunting at first. He will get used to it eventually. First put on his collar and leave that on him about the house and garden 'til he is used to it and then clip on his lead and let him trail it about.

Please only do this when you are watching him and take it off him if you need to leave him unattended or when he goes to bed as it can be very dangerous. He will get used to it being on in no time, and then you can take it a step futher and try leading him about the house and garden. It's a phase a lot of pups go through but is usually very short lived. In the meantime make sure you keep taking him out and about in your arms 'til he has had all of his jabs to make sure he learns to become well socialised.

Keep practicing though, he'll get there in the end, honest!

I'd put his lead on him just before you give him food, and consider getting him a harness to walk him on, as obviously if he's pulling that much then he will hate it and he could cause himself some real damage....

Take the lead off after he's finished his food. Try putting it on when you do training with him as well (have you considered clicker training). Good luck, hope to see some pics, and welcome to dogsey.
