Irish terriers start off with a lot of black...

...but should end up all red:

Bongo still has quite a lot of black in her beard, but only cos I won't strip it as I should A few people suggested that she looked like a fox cub when she was little, with the black mask. I wonder if it's a throwback to when camouflage was important to the survival of the species...?

Kerry blues are like blue poodles - born black, clearing to blue within 2 years.

Scotties are born black and stay black, westies born white and stay white.

Australian Cattle Dogs are born white with eye patches, body patches present, and develop their ticking slowly over the first year of their life.

Black & gold German shepherds are born mostly black though you can often see some gold showing & you can tell from the skin pigment the areas that are going to stay dark
True sables are born sable. If someone has a dog that looks gold sable but was born black its a fading black & gold. They can go on changing colour for most of their life. I used to mark my puppies with nail varnish in front of prospective buyers as they often claimed it was not the dog they had chosen when they returned. Have been known to resort to this myself when two were very similar to make sure I had the right puppy for their weekly weight check.

Blue Merle puppy, all pink nose.

A few dots of black on his nose...

More dots!

And now, his nose is basically all black!

This was his litter, border collies.

Yes his more was blue merle, his dad was black and white, I don't think you can breed two blue merles together though becase you get medial problems.

That is his mum and his dad.
