Vaccinations

Hi there,

I am getting my Dogue De Bordeaux (age 8 weeks) his first vaccinations in the morning and i have been reading about when and where he can go when he has had first and second vaccinations. so basicly i have come on here to get advice that is up to date and not 3 years old!! if anyone could help that would be great..

My main question is how long after his second set can he go out?? he is getting big and active very fast lol so want to be able to walk him as soon as it is safe.

Many thanks,
Adam

My vet said 10 days after 2nd vac but seen several on here who take their pups out on the ground from day 1 of getting them, it is a very important social period so if you are not comfortable with walking him so soon (i waited) carry him about to meet people and sounds daily so he isn't missing out on this crucial period , or buggy might be easier with him lol

we have been taking him out pretty much wherever we go he is still just about carriable lol he loves going down the local pub because all he gets is attention, i never let him go down but everyone is eager to cuddle him so he is being socialised well. its just when i can walk him its exercise to tire him out haha

Large breed dogs shouldn't be over exercised u til 12 months plus. He should be able to get his exercise through playtime in the home and garden until he can go out and about a bit more.

well, I did read the same, that you shouldn't over exercise so big and heavy breeds that early, because of their bones they need time to grow and getting strong enough, for to carry that high weight they will get and with too much exercise in puppy time, you could demage them?
but no clue if that's true
just heard/read about, but I never owned such a large dog

but to the initial immunization, I think you talk about?
over here in Germany, I never heard about, that you may not let him out, or shouldn't walk with him and just carry around him?

that statement to me, is a totally nonsense, sorry

Betty just had her second this morning, she can go for a walk where others dogs have been in a weeks time vet advised. But not too far at first and build up slowly. She has been on every walk we have done since she came to us as she is very portable and easy to carry, so she has been into work where 80 odd people wanted a chihuahua cuddle and round the local lake and green seeing Mollie say hello to all the lovely friendly dogs. Now she is wriggling and absolutely desperate to get down and meet all the dogs and have a sniff in the under growth with Molls.

Best socialisation has been allowing her to see Mollie saying hello to people and dogs.

people socialisation is important but so is meeting and greeting other dogs. Your dog may visit any dog that you know is up to date with its own vacs.
don't put him down in areas of heavy dog use. If you know an area dogs aren't usually taken, then you may let him play.
As to the rest its down to your level of risk avoidance.
You may never meet an infected dog during this wait period and get loads of valuable socialisation, but there are two sides to every coin.

I don't take newly vaccinated puppies out and about on the ground where other dogs have been until a week after the second vaccination.

I do take them out in my arms into a variety of places including the railway station and a builders yard which are both very noisy.

They also have the run of my garden which is free of dogs and foxes.
