Sorry hubby is thinking in human terms and dogs are not humans.

It takes a leap into the unknown to remove our 'human' thinking.

Basically if he gets reprimanded and punished when he does come back he'll think it's because he came back.

Lots of good books on the subject, I like Dr. Stanley Corens book 'How Dogs Think'

He's an academic so it's a tad heavy going in places but well worth the effort

Playing 'hide and seek' with your dog is a great way to teach good recall and make it fun for your dog! Also, here is a blogpost I wrote on positive reinforcement recall, I'm really hoping you might find some helpful tips in there: [link removed]
