Need a USB converter

I am trying to connect my scanner to my laptop to scan in some pics. The normal connection is through the printer, but I bought a new one a couple of years ago and it only has a USB connection to the laptop. The scanner has two "normal" printer cables, one goes to the printer the other to the laptop which has both types of connection.
Is there such a thing as a converter which will accept the USB lead in one end and have a "normal" printer connector on the other? If so, where can I get one online as I have no access to computer stores here?
Question 2 - can I bypass the printer and simply connect the scanner to the laptop? If so, how? I only want to upload the pics to the laptop.

Yes that's exactly it! BUT that company won't trade outside the USA so I can't order it.

Driver? I thought it was just a cable! Thanks Fred I'll see how it goes with the other recommendations....
Tried Aria last night, can't register as there is a compulsory field for postcode and it won't accept my usual "000000". (There are no postcodes in Ireland) so I have emailed them.
I am going over to Birmingham this weekend for Crufts, don't know if I can stop off anywhere for a computer shop .... might be worth a try.
